COMMON QUESTIONS
FAQs - Refinishing
What our clients most commonly ask before beginning a millwork project.
How long does a full door refinishing typically take?
Most full exterior refinishing jobs are completed within 3–5 business days from strip-down to reinstallation. Scope, number of doors, and condition of the existing finish can affect timing. We confirm a specific schedule during the on-site evaluation.
Can you refinish any wood door, regardless of species or age?
In most cases, yes. We refinish mahogany, white oak, sapele, walnut, cherry, and other premium hardwoods. The main factor is structural integrity. If the door itself is sound, we can typically restore it. Very old doors with significant wood damage may require repair work before refinishing.
Does the door need to be removed from the frame?
It depends on scope. Light topcoat renewal can sometimes be performed in place. Full exterior refinishing typically requires removing the door and bringing it to our facility for proper stripping, conditioning, and multi-stage finishing in a climate-controlled environment.
How long will the refinished finish last before it needs attention again?
A properly refinished exterior door should maintain its performance for 5–7 years in the Midwest climate before a topcoat renewal is recommended. Annual inspection of seals and finish condition is a good practice, we provide a care guide with every job.
How does refinishing compare to door replacement in cost?
Refinishing typically costs 20–40% of a comparable replacement door, and often considerably less when you factor in frame work, installation, and hardware. For doors with architectural significance or sentimental value, refinishing is almost always the right answer economically and aesthetically.
Can you match my current stain color exactly, or change it to something new?
Both. We can match an existing stain to within a very tight tolerance using our finish library and custom-matching process. Or we can transform the color entirely, from natural to ebony, or from paint to a natural wood stain. Samples are reviewed and approved before production.
Do you also address the glass panels and hardware during a refinishing job?
Yes, glass inspection, cleaning, and sealant refresh is included in most refinishing scopes. Hardware is assessed for condition, and we can supply upgraded hinges, locksets, pulls, or sweeps from our partner brands (Emtek, Baldwin, Rocky Mountain Hardware) as part of the same appointment.
