Who We Are
Scobis started in 2001 as a door shop in St. Louis. The standard was set early. Build it precisely, own the result, and make it hold up long after installation.
That focus grew. Today we design, build, and install custom entry and interior doors, trim and custom interior woodwork, and we restore existing doors through our refinishing division. We work with homeowners, architects, designers, builders, and churches across the St. Louis area.

What kinds of woodwork do you refinish?
Exterior and interior wood doors, furniture, handrails, built-ins, and architectural millwork such as trim, mouldings, and paneling. Share photos and a short description through our contact page and we’ll advise on the next step.
Is refinishing the same as applying another coat?
Not necessarily. A new coat over an existing finish may not fix poor adhesion, damage, or uneven color. Refinishing starts with evaluating the surface, then choosing the preparation and finish work it needs.
How long does wood door refinishing take?
It depends on the size of the piece, its condition, whether the old finish has to be removed, and drying and curing time. We’ll give you a timeline once we’ve evaluated the piece.
Do you remove the door from the frame, or refinish it in place?
It depends on the piece and the scope. Some work is best done in our shop and some on-site. We’ll discuss access and handling during the evaluation; refinishing in place isn’t right for every project.
Can you match my current stain color or change it to something new?
Most wood species can be refinished, including heavily weathered doors. The species, the existing finish, and the depth of any damage determine what’s possible, which is why we evaluate first.
Can you refinish old or weathered wood doors regardless of species?
Often, yes. Matching or changing a color or sheen depends on the wood, the current finish, and its condition. We’ll review samples and options with you before any work begins.
How long does a professional door refinish last?
It depends on exposure. A door facing full sun and weather needs maintenance sooner than one under a covered porch, and interior pieces last much longer. We recommend a maintenance schedule for your piece.
Is refinishing a wood door cheaper than replacing it?
In many cases, yes, especially custom or architectural doors that would be expensive to replace. If a door is too damaged to restore, the evaluation will tell you, and we can discuss a custom replacement.
